Turning up to an interview is always stressful, especially when you are a girl in a male dominated industry. It was my first ever ‘proper job’ and I really did not know what to expect when I knew that most of my new colleagues would be male. Everything was new and challenging, but I thought nothing ventured, nothing gained! So, I decided to go ahead and promised myself not to be too afraid of the up-and-coming challenges.
I have always been very aware that within the IT industry developers and management staff do not always have enough time to explain things, especially when you are a newcomer. I also had some doubts about the office work, as it meant less in the way of movement and way more sitting, also having a monotonous and uninteresting job was the last thing I wanted. Looking back at that time, I’m really glad that I made the right decision and one which I now know that I will never regret.
To my surprise, my new co-workers were very easy-going and helpful, which made my probation period really smooth and actually quite exciting. I quickly got adopted into the company due to the team attitude, who have always supported me and believed that I could accomplish any task. I have asked for help and explanation countless times, but together with my mentor we have always found a solution. This period has showed me that there are no hopeless situations, there are only people who have grown hopeless about them. So, my greatest aim was not to be one of those people.
The first month was the hardest ever and I now know that it was a real milestone on my road to success. I quickly realized one thing – if you overcome the first obstacles, the larger obstacles which are further away become much less scary. Within a few days it was already becoming much easier for me to investigate the issues, provide reports to customers and fix the bugs. At the end of my probation period I felt myself more professional and mature. Of course, there is still a lot to learn, but I’m now really convinced, that learning is a lifelong process and I truly believe, that with the hard work and persistence I can accomplish just about anything.
I also now realize how important the team is and appreciate the friendly and positive atmosphere which exists at our company. What can be better than eating pizza or playing board games with your workmates after a long working day? I now know how to do serious and complicated work whilst having lots of fun!
And finally … I have baked a beautiful and delicious cake with the company’s logo in gratitude to the warm welcome and generous hospitality!
